How do I use an AED?

  5. Open and attach the self-adhesive electrode pads directly to the patient’s skin.
    • You will attach one electrode pad one to the upper side of the person’s chest.
    • The other electrode pad goes to the lower side of the victim’s chest (a few inches under the armpit).
  6. In some cases, you will need to plug the pad connector into the AED yourself.
  7. Allow the AED to check the person’s heart rhythm.
  8. Ensure no one is touching the victim.
  9. You loudly and authoritatively shout the word’ ‘clear.’
  10. The AED will then instruct you to press the shock button to deliver the shock.

How many times can you defibrillate someone?

You can use a defibrillator as many times as you need, as long as you follow the same exact instructions every single time.

But, every time you do use a defibrillator on the victim, the chances of survival get lower.

What happens after I use a defibrillator?

After the shock has been delivered, you will perform CPR for two minutes using compressions.
